ROOTING DC IS BACK

DC’s BEST Urban Gardening Event

DC’s Field to Fork Network where all good things about urban gardening occur is hosting its 4th annual Rooting DC event.

Whether you have a GREEN thumb or not you are encouraged to come out and discover everything about urban gardening in DC. DC’s Field to Fork Network is an amazing organization that came together not all that long ago to help DC’s residents understand more about the opportunity that exists in their own backyards as well as area community gardens that exist around the District for public use.

If you have ever wandered around the District you sometimes come across these amazing garden spaces that have neighbors busy tending little Summer garden plots. Some community gardens are larger than others and there are more in some areas than others. Field to Fork has a great map of all the garden plots.

Come to the Washington Youth Garden tomorrow from 5:00-6:30pm to learn about forest gardens. This hand-on demonstration is perfect for beginners and will coverall the basics from what to grow and how to tips on pruning and thinning your fruit trees. Forest gardens are perfect for compact schoolyards and urban lots, so if you’re interested, please RSVP to Trinh Doan at patricia.doan(at)dc(dot)gov. Scott Aker, the head horticulturalist at the US National Arboretum, will be leading the workshop.

Sign up now to bring your group of youth out to the Washington Youth Garden at the National Arboretum this fall. Our outreach field trip program, SPROUT (Science Program Reaching OUT) serves school and community groups from across the Washington metro area. Students have a ninety minute garden experience and participate in a nutrition education lesson with a healthy snack. Our schedule fills up quickly, so contact us now to reserve a spot.

The Washington Youth Garden will be  holding two more dates in July for volunteers who haven’t been out to the WYG to get oriented. So come on out on Saturday, July 10 or Saturday, July 17. All volunteers need to fill out some paperwork before starting and will get an overview of garden protocol. Please arrive at 9am – we’ll have a short orientation till around 10am, then volunteer in the garden from 10am to 12pm.

After that, we have regular volunteer hours every Tuesday and Saturday morning until mid October.

If you plan on coming on the 10th or 17th, please email our volunteer coordinator Emily Roberts to let her know you’re coming:
emilyroberts@gmail.com

Also, save the date for our friends and family fun day. This will be a celebratory day out in the garden with food, live music, and gardening activities for children. We’ll be opening up a new section of the garden called a Nature Explore Classroom and will also have our beekeeper on hand to give a show and tell of our two new beehives. It’s Saturday, July 24th from 12pm to 4pm. I’ll be asking for volunteers to help out soon, but for now just mark your calendars because we’d love to have a fun day out in the garden with all you wonderful volunteers. No weeding, we promise!

WYG received donations of outdoor plants and are in need of assistance because it is the end of the school year and the students are preparing for their final exams.

They need help preparing soil and installing plants on the following dates between 8:00am and 6:00pm:

Monday – 6/14/10
Tuesday – 6/15/10
Wednesday – 6/16/10

WYG _DSC0618WYG is also looking for a committed person to serve as volunteer coordinator on Saturday mornings. This is not a paid position, but the volunteer coordinator will receive a box of organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs every week. This person would need to be at the April 10th volunteer orientation and would need to commit to four hours every Saturday morning from May 8th until the middle of August. Email kwarner@washingtonyouthgarden.org for more information.

Thanks! Looking forward to seeing you out in the garden.
